Arise and Awake: A Stirring Message from Swami Vivekananda’s 1897 Lahore Address - हिंद पुनरुत्थान संघ

Introduction

While exploring historical texts and speeches that have shaped India’s spiritual and social consciousness, we came across a digital copy of Swami Vivekananda’s legendary lecture on Vedanta, delivered on 12 November 1897 in Lahore.

The complete lecture spans over 40 pages, filled with profound insights, fierce passion, and an urgent call to action. Below, we are sharing just one powerful page from the concluding part of that address — a page that continues to ignite minds and awaken hearts even more than a century later.

Excerpt from Swami Vivekananda’s Lecture on Vedanta

Lahore, November 12, 1897

Therefore, young men of Lahore, raise once more that mighty banner of Advaita, for on no other ground can you have that wonderful love until you see that the same Lord is present everywhere.

Unfurl that banner of love!

Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.

Arise, arise once more, for nothing can be done without renunciation.

If we want to help others, our little selves must go. In the words of the Christians — you cannot serve God and Mammon at the same time.

Let us have Vairagya — that noble dispassion. Our ancestors gave up the world to accomplish great things.

Today, many renounce the world for their own salvation. But Swamiji challenges us to throw away even our desire for personal liberation — and dedicate our lives to the service of others.

We may speak bold words, but here is practical Vedanta before us:

Give up this little life.

What matters if we die of starvation — you, I, and thousands like us — so long as the nation lives?

The nation is sinking. The curse of unnumbered millions is on our heads —

— those to whom we gave ditch-water to drink while the river of abundance flowed past them…

— the millions we have allowed to starve while preaching plenty…

— the millions to whom we’ve spoken of Advaita, yet have treated with hatred and division

— the millions for whom we invented social customs (Lokâchâra), and to whom we preached oneness while practicing separation.

“Yet, my friends, it must be only in the mind and never in practice!”

Wipe off this blot. Arise and awake.

What does it matter if this small life ends? Everyone dies – saints and sinners, rich and poor alike.

The body remains with no one.

Arise and awake – and be perfectly sincere.

Our insincerity in India is awful; what we truly need is character
that steadfastness that makes a person cling to truth like grim death.

Why These Words Still Matter

Reading these words today, we are reminded that Vedanta is not merely a philosophy to be discussed, but a path to be lived. Swami Vivekananda called on the youth to rise, not just in spirit, but in selfless service, renunciation, and nation-building.

We believe this message is more urgent now than ever before – a spiritual wake-up call not only for India but for the world.

Let us not merely admire these words. Let us live them.
